On October 18, 2023, the Government of Portugal deposited its instrument of ratification to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indication (“Geneva Act”).

This ratification will allow Portugal to protect its appellations of origin and geographical indications under the Geneva Act, including those in the non-agricultural product category such as “Bordado da Madeira” (Madeira embroidery) or “Filigrana de Portugal” (filigree), but also its renowned appellations of origin in the wine and spirits categories such as “Porto” , “Vinho Verde” , or “Douro”, among many others.

With this accession, the Geneva Act now offers protection in 21 Contracting Parties covering up to 57 countries, while the Lisbon System covers up to 72 countries in total.

The Geneva Act will enter into force with respect to Portugal on January 18, 2024.
