The new rules for registering .PT domains introduce stricter identity verification procedures and new transparency requirements (aligned with the European NIS2 cybersecurity directive).

Key changes include:

– Data validation: Rigorous verification of identity and the accuracy of contact details is now required. If .PT requests additional documentation (such as proof of a tax identification number or authority to act on behalf of the registrant), it must be submitted within 2 working days, failing which the domain will be blocked.

– End of privacy protection for legal entities: Their details (name and address) can no longer be withheld and are now publicly available in the WHOIS directory. Individuals’ data remain protected.

– Domain registration under the .edu.pt and .org.pt extensions are no longer available.

When will data validation be required?

  • New registrations (where the registrant does not already have a previously validated contact).
  • Changes of ownership (a new registrant or responsible entity).
  • Changes to the email address.
  • Changes to the registrant’s contact telephone number.

Confirmation of the email address and telephone number may be required. This confirmation may be carried out by email, SMS or telephone call, depending on the type of contact provided.
